New to our Barry Carpet showroom are a selection of beautiful and classic area rugs from some of the flooring industry’s top designers. Read on to learn the best ways to charm your home or office with a gorgeous area rug.

According to Floor Covering Weekly, area rugs are best used as an accent that adds a personalized flair to your space. From a design perspective, some home decor professionals select the area rug for the room even before wall colors, furniture and home decor items. An area rug can make or break a room. The right area rug can anchor and define separate spaces in a studio layout and add liveliness to a space.

In 2018, the rug trends are colorful, global-inspired prints and recycled materials. At Barry Carpet, we have a plethora of incredible eco-friendly carpets that can be customized to fit into any room you desire.

While an area rug is a common addition to add on top of hard surface floor such as hardwood or LVT, it can even be laid over broadloom carpet. In addition to the stylish ambiance they create, area rugs offer warmth, comfort and noise reduction.

Interior Designer’s Tips to Pick the Perfect Area Rug

We asked some of LA’s top interior designers what their secrets are to pick the perfect area rug and this is what they said:

Erin Morris from of Homegirl Collection shared her wise words: “Area rugs are like art and can make or break a room. A few things I often tell people when choosing a rug is don’t go too small - I’d rather see no area rug in a room than one that is too small for the space. Also, choose something that is going to hold up in your home environment... choose something you love and go a little crazy if your space allows it. An area rug can always be switched up, so have fun.”

Christine Thompson & Andrea Putnam from JAC Interiors revealed: “We love to customize a rug for a bespoke look, to make sure we get the perfect size. We will often pick a wall to wall carpet and then cut it to the exact size we want, so it’s perfect every time!”

At Barry Carpet of West Los Angeles, we carry standard size rugs and can create custom size rugs. With a wide selection of designs and brands to choose from, you are sure to find a rug at Barry Carpet that will enhance and add charm to any decor and ambiance.

1. How would you describe your style?

Modern with a twist. We like to mix metals and juxtapose materials for an eclectic one of a kind look.

2. Where do you get your design inspiration?

So many places! From nature to local restaurants and hotels to iconic fashion designers and vintage furnishing, we see beauty and lines all over the place and try to translate that into a modern vision for living.

3. What is trending in the interior design community today?

Jewel tones are really big for spring 2018. Floral motifs are making a strong comeback, in fabrics and wallpapers too. Black and white and the contrast it creates is very hot right now—we see it in every aspect of design, both on the inside and the outside of the house and furnishings and materials.

4. What are your favorite flooring options in 2018?

We love light woods like a European white oak with some grays in it. It feels high end but modern and natural, not too forced. The texture adds dimension to any room.

5. What is your secret to pick the perfect area rug?

We love to customize a rug for a bespoke look, to make sure we get the perfect size. We will often pick a wall to wall carpet and then cut it to the exact size we want, so it’s perfect every time!

6. What is your fantasy home and where in the world would you want it to be?

Love the idea of a mountain home, in Moab, Utah! The landscape is literally out of this world, and so inspiring!

1. How would you describe your style?

Boho/eclectic with splashes of old world charm.

2. Where do you get your design inspiration?

My design inspiration comes from the amazing community I’ve met online, mostly through Instagram. There are so many talented people that are not just designers, but passionate about decorating and creating gorgeous spaces. What I love about the online design community is that everyone can share their own personal journey whether they’re hiring a famous interior designer or DIYing their space. Specifically, I gather some of my inspiration from Instagram accounts such as @corre.marie, @Becrowbe, @ChrisLovesJulia, @Skaynedesigns, @a1000xbetter and @carlaypage.

3. What is trending in the interior design community today?

White spaces are still huge. Paint everything white and add character through textiles, flooring and art. Dark moody spaces are also on the rise with olive green tones. If I were brave enough, I’d incorporate olive green cabinets into my upcoming kitchen renovation. I’m also loving loud, veiny marble. I used to love the very soft marble but now, give me all the crazy slabs!

4. What are your favorite flooring options in 2018?

I’m infatuated with wide planked, matte toned hardwood that I’m seeing in homes. Cement tiles are popping up in kitchens and bathrooms and I’m so impressed with wood-look tile and the newest vinyl flooring. There are so many beautiful options.

5. What is your secret to pick the perfect area rug?

Since I tend to change my style up, an area rug allows me to keep things fresh. Area rugs are like art and can make or break a room. A few things I often tell people when choosing a rug is don’t go too small - I’d rather see no area rug in a room than one that is too small for the space. Also, choose something that is going to hold up in your home environment. I once chose a cream Moroccan Beni rug and within a couple months it was no longer cream but gray! And choose something you love and go a little crazy if your space allows it. An area rug can always be switched up, so have fun.

6. What is your fantasy home and where in the world would you want it to be?

Living here in Southern California is my dream. My fantasy home would have wide, open ceilings, tons of light and lots of land. I’m in love with many different styles of homes so my dream home could be a modern farmhouse, Spanish hacienda or just a simple California bungalow! I’d choose rustic, wide planked, white oak flooring.

We love these interior designer flooring and area rug tips! Barry Carpet loves working with designers and is open to the trade. We service all of Los Angeles, including Santa Monica, Brentwood, Pacific Palisades, Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Malibu, DTLA, Hollywood, Pasadena and even the OC! Eco-friendly

At Barry Carpet, we too are passionate about aesthetics and our environmental footprint. We offer several brands that carry a unique type of carpet made out of the organic material, Jute. A completely biodegradable fiber, jute is a great eco-friendly alternative to traditional carpet.

Durable

Naturally thick and durable, these natural fiber rugs are woven into beautiful braided and exotic textures. Even though Jute is strong, it is softer underfoot than alternative earth-friendly materials, like seagrass or sisal.

Stylish Ambiance

A jute rug adds stylish raw texture and may be the perfect accent piece for you to create an organic home decor aesthetic and ambiance. For example, a rug made of bleached jute fabric will produce a clean, laid-back feel. A sisal jute rug, which combines 2 plant fibers, with a dark brown edge, will create a bolder look. A jute rug may complement an area that has anything from a contemporary design to a vintage vibe.

Low Maintenance

Not only that, Jute is low maintenance! It does not require special everyday care, as it is less likely to accumulate as much dirt and dust as other carpets. Naturally brown in color, jute makes stains less noticeable. Jute can also be used as a backing for wool carpet or used in composite form as the underlay for linoleum. Jute is best placed in low-traffic household areas, like in a bedroom or living room, allowing the natural rug to last for many years.

We, at Barry Carpet, look forward to helping you decide which type of eco-friendly flooring works best for your living space. If you find that jute does not suit your taste, we have many other products that can do the trick, such as seagrass, rubber, wool and more! See our Eco-Friendly Flooring Options Here to learn about more earth-friendly flooring options. Give us a call to see if we carry the flooring that supports your design vision!
