Make Everyday, Earth Day

earth day

I’m a baby boomer…an aging, back in the day, hippie meditator. I marched in Washington for Equal Women’s Rights and to end the War - it was the late 60’s and soul searching times. All these years later and I own a flooring store. I ask myself: “What did I learn and what can I do now to contribute and improve the world we live in?” Here’s one very important way: go green.

Each year, Earth Day—April 22—marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement that began in 1970. War raged in Vietnam and students nationwide, myself included, overwhelmingly opposed it. At the time, we were slurping leaded gas through V8 sedans. In Hollywood, the smog was so bad, that you couldn’t see the Hollywood sign.

The stage had been set for change by the 1962 publication of bestseller Silent Spring by Rachel Carson, and awesomely, my aunt had the book and was passionate about it. The book represented a watershed moment and began to raise public awareness and concern for living organisms, the environment and links between pollution and public health.

Over fifty years later, we are now facing climate change and the destruction of our earth at alarming rates. Since we would not exist without our planet, it is our obligation to be conscious of our footprint.

How do we help?

Everything that you touch, breathe and ingest impacts your health. At Barry Carpet, we recycle, use green cleaning products, and try to sell as many eco-friendly flooring products as possible. When it comes time to choosing flooring for your home or office, it is important to consider how much time you spend in the presence of the products you consume.

Earth Day

When looking for an eco-friendly carpet, at Barry Carpet, we have a wide array of choices that consist of natural fibers. Some of these fibers include: wool, sisal, seagrass, jute, and coir, all suitable for both broadloom and area rugs. Renewable resources like wool and other biodegradable options that include plant-based fibers are popular for their sustainable impact, but also can create beautiful patterns and designs for any living area.

For a different look and ambiance, we also offer additional eco-friendly flooring options such as linoleum (marmoleum), cork, bamboo, and rubber. Linoleum, cork and bamboo stand as beautiful hardwood alternatives. Linoleum and rubber flooring are made from natural and recycled materials often used in both commercial and residential projects. In addition to the renewable component to many of these, these flooring options can be very effective in dampening sound and creating a warm, cozy environment.

At Barry Carpet, we are proud to support Earth Day and the world we live in. Check out the “Eco-Friendly Floors” page on our website to learn more details about how each product is made. Give us a call or come by our West LA showroom so we can help you find the brands perfect for you!
